A Call From DD

I spoke with DD on Tuesday.

He called, in response to my letter, but I wasn't home. He left a message on our answering machine.

It was weird, it sounded like he was about to cry.

I was so very nervous, but I called him back. I didn't know how to start the conversation, and he wasn't helping either.

"Hi Dan, I got your message."

"Yeah... I got your letter today."

Uncomfortable silence...

"Yeah..."

"I guess first things first, congratulations are in order."

"Yup, I'm a married lady now. Weird isn't it? I'm really happy, I love him a lot."

"Is that the English dude I met last year?"

"Yup. James."

"Oh."

"So I heard about your problems you've been having lately."

"Yeah, dude that was from like, two years ago... I just never got picked up. Who called you anyway?"

"The child support enforcement division."

"Oh."

"So... "

"Yeah... "

Uncomfortable silence...

"Um... What did you think of the letter?"

"Uh... I guess it would be a good thing."

"Yeah, James really loves her and she loves him."

Uncomfortable silence...

"Yeah... It would probably be the best thing for her."

"I really want to do this. If anything happened to me, right now Hani would end up with you, and that's probably not a good thing."

"Yeah, I can't even take care of myself."

"That's not what I meant, Dan."

"But its true."

Uncomfortable silence...

"Also, I would like for her to have his last name so she won't feel left out. When I was little my mom remarried and I had a different last name from everyone else. I hated that."

"I don't know how much you'll need me for, it will probably be an easy thing."

"But will you help us? If we need you to go to court or something?"

"Yes, I will Joni."

"Thanks, Dan that's really decent of you."

"I know it doesn't seem like it, and this may sound stupid, but I really do care about her. I am just fucked up."

Yet another uncomfortable silence...

"Well... I guess that's it then... Thank you... "

"Yeah, ok... "

"I'll call you soon and let you know what I need from you. Ok?"

"Yup. Bye."

"Bye"
