How can someone hurt something so small and trusting?

Check out my website:

Well, we are all moved in! It only took a week!
Less than a week actually. I love it here. A whole house, all to ourselves. A clean, neat home. A place for my kids to run around like little maniacs! We already had a few friends over, and it was so nice to be able to do that.
The witchling has her first sleepover scheduled for Wednesday and between that and the horses I think she might bust!
To add to our new life we have another family member. We are calling her Carly. She is a Jack Russell. About a year old, we think. Its hard to tell, she has her adult teeth, but she still looks like a puppy. And she is very small. We think she might have been underfed and stunted.
A homeschooling friend found her in the woods and took her to a no kill shelter in the area. She asked to be informed if the owner came for the dog. The shelter called a few days later and told her that Carly had been claimed, but they also said that if she ever found Carly again, she should keep her. Apparently Carly looked and acted abused and the owner acted suspicious when they came to get her.
Then, just a few days ago, they found Carly alone again in the woods. She was hungry and covered in fleas and ticks. So they took her and asked around for someone to take her in.
(They can't because they already have too many animals)
We decided we would, since we already have one Jack Russell and we now have more room.
Poor little Carly. She is really sweet and lovable. But I think she was hurt badly before. She favors her left back leg. She can't sit unless it ias straight out behind her. I think it was broken once and healed funny. She doesn't seem to be in any pain, since she jumps up on my bed and runs all around, but its obvious that something isn't right with it.
And when I said "Bad Girl" to Tessa, our other Jack Russell, Carly cringed and tried to hide. She was really scared!
So we are going to get her to a vet ASAP, to make sure she is ok.
She is the nicest dog. And she can't weigh more than nine pounds.
