I went to the grocery store at about noon on Saturday, with both of the kids. As I was wrestling a cart out of the line, this old woman came up beside me and we struck up a conversation about antibacterial hand wipes... (Our supermarket has a tub of them near the carts so you can wipe them down before putting a baby in the basket seat... Awesome Idea! Must have been a mommy who thought of that)
Then this woman tells me that there is a baby locked in a car and someone is out there waiting for the mother to come back!
Now, its 90 degrees on a cloudless, humid, baking day. I just couldn't go about my shopping till I knew the baby was ok. So I put the kids in the cart and went out to te parking lot.
The car was locked up tight as a drum. There wasn't even a window cracked! We hovered around, anxiously watching this sweating, screaming, infant who couldn't have been more than three months old. I felt so helpless. The woman who was waiting with me had already been there for five minutes, and we called the police, and waited together another ten minutes for them to arrive.
I just kept seeing those tiny eyes staring at me through the glass... I was actually looking for something to break the window with when the police showed up...
While he was getting a slimjim out of the cruiser, to shimmy the lock open, this little blonde woman came strolling out of the store with a cart full to the top of groceries. She wasn't even hurrying, but she was looking at all of us in a way that let me know it was her car.
I asked her if it was hers, and she said "yeah". Then I asked her if she was aware she left her baby in the car, and she said "Oh, yeah... But I was only gone a few minutes..."
Now we'd been there for at least fifteen minutes, and this stupid bitch had to have been gone longer than that with the amount of shopping she had done!
She actually laughed when the policeman asked for her information.
Babies die in closed up cars! Everyone knows that... This little tiny baby could have easily died and that stupid fucking bitch was laughing!
I was so angry I was shaking... The rescue truck came and they took the baby in the back to be checked out.
And I just stood there, flabbergasted that she actually thought this was funny, it was so funny that we were making this huge deal about her being gone for "a few minutes!"
The policeman went into the store and came out with a thermometer, which he put in the car... In just ten minutes that car was over 100 degrees! And that poor little girl was in there longer than that!
GRRRRRR!!!! It makes me want to shout all over again, just thinking about this!
Anyway, the baby was taken to the hospital for observation and fluids, and the mother was arrested for child endangerment...
Stupid bitch.
If I ever see her again I think I will slap her.
I mean, there are so many warnings and notices about how hot a car can get, you've either got to be really fucking stupid, or just not care at all to do that.
I mean, I wouldn't even leave my dog in the car... Nevermind my children!
